The chorus, which is the same as the title, was originally written as "Has Anybody Seen My Friend", by Tor and Roy Pinney from The Dolphins, Peter Cross' first band. "Has Anybody Seen My Friend" had the same great chorus melody and harmonies, but different verses, both melodicly and lyrically. Essentially, it had no intrinsic meaning, but supposedly it didn't have to because it was so catchy that it had to be a #1-with-a-bullet hit. Why any intelligent person would miss a friend and be asking other people whether they had seen this missing friend was never explained in the song, because there was no real-life friend who was missing at the time. Many subsequent attempts were made to rewrite the song, but to no avail, it never came together, and nobody cared whether the missing friend was ever seen again or was even real to begin with. Unfortunately, the chorus stuck in Peter Cross' head forever. The change came from a real life friend this time, one who was fixated on finding the girl of his dreams, and every time he went out to a bar, party, funeral or whatever, he would say "I can feel it, God, tonight I'm going to meet the girl of my dreams!" He said it one too many times, and the connection in Peter Cross' mind went zap (while driving again, this happens a lot). At the Tiki Hut in Hollyweird, recording basic tracks for "The Girl of My Dreams" was magical. Philip, Eric, and Dean played it best on the first take. Philip overdubbed rhythm and lead guitars brilliantly. The slide guitar lead in the middle of the song was recorded at the very last minute, just before Peter had to catch a plane back to San Francisco. Philip's playing knocked him out so badly that he got lost on the way to the airport following Philip's "short cut" directions. The vocal tracks were recorded in San Francisco. There are 14 vocal tracks (or maybe 16), a Peter Cross vocal extravaganza, and this is where the many Peter Crosses singing together got dubbed "The Crossants". |
