Morrisville, Pa — As the name suggests, The Stir Fry Music Revival served up a heaping portion of good times and music with “a little bit of this and a little bit of that.” Whether it was some bluegrass and funky folk or rock mixed with reggae and roots, the bands were cooking.

A festival can offer a unique opportunity. For a regular show, the band comes in, does their thing, packs and goes home; however, a festival allows bands to interact with each other. There were many of these amazing interchanges at Stir Fry. One of them occurred as soon as the first band finished their set. DotMan was on the main stage MC-ing between bands. Tin Bird Choir was setting up for their set on the second stage. DotMan started singing what appeared to be an impromptu song, “The Stir Fry Blues”. The lead singer from Tin Bird Choir turned her soundcheck into a harmonizing session with DotMan. Not only were two great musicians having a cosmic collision, it was also made available for an audience to experience.

Another example of what can be found in a Stir Fry mix is “Josh The Bassist”.
Q: How often does a musician get to play three sets with three different bands for the same audience?
A; Only at an event like Stir Fry.
For the Friday evening crowd, Josh played bass with Tin Bird Choir, Manatawny Creek Ramblers and Frog Holler. When he was finished, I caught up with him to shake his hand, “That must be tough. Most people can not make it through one show. You did it with not just one or two, but you did it with three different bands. And, with Manatawny Creek Ramblers, you played a stand-up bass!” Josh replied, “Thank you. I suppose that is unusual to be able to play that long with diverse bands. And, yes, you are right. The hardest part was carrying the stand-up bass through the parking lot.”

There are so many simultaneous things going on at a festival. It is difficult to take them all in, yet that special Stir Fry ingredient could be found throughout. If you were performing and looked out, you could see your idols in the audience. J.R., keyboardist for Wide Eyed Mother Brothers was performing when he spotted someone in the audience. He stopped and pointed out to the crowd, “Do you see this guy? This guy right here? He taught me everything I know about playing keyboards.”

These kinds of cosmic collisions happened all weekend long. You might have witnessed Si Senorita in the audience being “wowed” by DotMan’s harmonica playing, spotted Steal The Breeze in the audience dancing to Si Senorita or heard the Dirty White Boys playing unplugged in the campground at Bob’s Country Bunker. It did not matter exactly where at the festival you were. You were bound to enjoy an experience like these. All that mattered — you were there.

It is too bad every day can not be stir-fried, at least we can look forward to next year.

Philadelphia — Former members of Evanescence fronted by American Idol contestant Carly Smithson have changed their name from The Fallen to We Are the Fallen after being issued a “cease and desist” order from the Philadelphia based band The Fallen.

There are conflicting reports over which band “The Fallen” issued the cease and desist order. There is also a British rock band called The Fallen.

Wikipedia and the UK The Fallen’s Blog claim it is the English cover band that formed in 2005.

Radio station 104.5 and music news MOG report it is the Philadelphia, PA based, The Fallen, that started in late 2005.

Hmmm… it makes you wonder if the Philadelphia band and the UK band will write each other cease and desist orders?

This journey began in 2001 when at 17 years old, Stuart and Callum formed the band. During this year they played small local shows and school concerts, gaining valuable experience. The duo quickly formed a fantastic musical understanding of one another and shared the same goals and ambitions. Through the years they wrote a full album that falls within the heavy rock/alternative genre. This has been developed through time and experience. Along the way they took on many band members, attempting to create the sound they were striving for. Through various reasons, mainly lack of drive and ambition from the other members, they parted ways with them, seeking the perfect line up. During this time however, there were many positives. A backlog of material was pieced together and valuable gigging and recording experience was gained through the previous line-ups.

September 2008 spawned the birth of the band Purusa. In this month Stuart and Callum found the perfect line up. This now included vocalist and lyricist, Emma. Her all round package of unique vocals, lyrical ability, ambition and aura made her the missing piece they searched to find. Emma has many years of singing experience, going right back to singing cover songs in school concerts (age 11). Her other experience mainly includes singing solo local shows and singing competitions, usually to backing tracks or a single guitar. However, Emma’s desire was always to be the front woman of a heavy rock band. She began her search for this band in 2007. Many bands were tried but unfortunately, none met her high standards… Until she met Purusa.

Purusa’s first endeavour was to write and produce a concept album that has been named ‘Intrinsic’ which is representational of the journey through life and is best described as gothic ambience. This album was created due to the fact that the band struggled to find a drummer that would meet their high standards of ambition, determination and musicianship. In April 2009, all members of the band quit their full time jobs to focus fully on recording their debut album. Due to the bands ambitions towards being successful they searched long and hard and found a session drummer called Tim Kitchen who naturally understood the vibe and intricacies of the songs.

Purusa have currently completed their first 3 track E.P. entitled ‘Anoxia’ which includes Emma’s vocals. They are currently working with a designer to complete artwork for the E.P. which best represents the music. In the meantime the songs are available to listen to on MySpace and Taxi.

Purusa have received excellent, positive feedback from the general public and Radio stations from America, Germany and the UK have shown enough interest to play the songs and promote them on their own pages. They have also been approached by a film director/writer to use one of their songs in a new feature length production, and producer Sylvia Massy has contacted them to discuss recording with her.

Purusa have a marketable image and all the drive and ambition required to ‘make it’ in the industry. They also have a fresh and completely unique sound. Uncommonly to other bands, Purusa’s main influence is its own music. The band constantly strives to build upon and improve in any way the music that they have written previously. They live for playing their own music and listen to their own creations more than those of any other bands.

Lollapalooza 2009 will be held in Austin and Chicago. The lineup will include: Kings Of Leon, Jane’s Addiction, Depeche Mode and the Beastie Boys. The full lineup is ecpected to be announced in April.

Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha, Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos, Hanson’s Taylor Hanson and the bassist from Fountains Of Wayne Adam Schlesinger have formed a new band called Tinted Windows.

The group has recorded a full length album and will perform at Billboard’s South by Southwest showcase on March 20 in Austin, Texas.

Sony kind-of bought American culture. A few years back they purchased BMG. Who was BMG? Well, they were an American company that bought-up a bunch of then famous American record labels, like EPIC and Columbia Records.

Way back before all of this merger activity…
the independent labels brought forth some great music. A large portion of what has become known as “classic rock” is included in this music catalog.

Back then, you’d hear the announcer on a live album, such as REO Speedwagon, step up to the microphone and say, “EPIC recording artist, REO Speedwagon….” And, ther crowd would roar. Then, BMG bought a large number of intellectual property rights, including this EPIC recording. Next, BMG got bought by the bigger fish, SONY.
